Optimal Design of a Canopy Using Parametric Structural Design and a Genetic Algorithm

The structural performance of any building design is often dependent on the geometrical shape, which affects its behavior and stability. Structural consideration optimization in conceptual stage process can lead to better solutions exploration. In this paper, a approach for generating structurally optimizing form phase presented. method applied canopy an ecological island (waste collection center Rome, Italy). We demonstrate how parametric facilitate decision-maker generate analyze optimal rapidly process. Fully models are created Rhinoceros3D® environment interfaced with in-house built algorithms, Finite Element simulations performed DubalRFEM. An island’s has been completely redesigned Genetic Algorithm Dynamic Relaxation Algorithm, resulting free-form shape-resistant structure. Finally, shape-optimized meets various requirements (structural, functional, formal) that improve efficiency collaboration, such as role architect engineer relationship between designer tools.
